The agitated students carrying placards also pushed Mitra around and shouted slogans as he tried to enter the planning commission office to meet Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
In the melee, his white kurta was torn.
NDTV reported Mitra saying that he was attacked and beaten with sticks by women activists, and some even attempted to snatch his wallet away.
SFI activists were protesting the death of the 22-year-old student leader, who allegedly died due to police brutality during a rally.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee cancelled her scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the pretext, that she is unwell.
Trinamool Congress in a statement said the reason behind Mamata Banerjee cancelling her slated meeting, is her heath. They said she is unwell and is down with fever.
This decision was taken hours after shouting protesters surrounded Mamata Banerjee and attacked Amit Mitra.
A fuming West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was to meet Ahluwalia to finalise the annual plan 2013-14 for the state, described the protest as "dirty politics".
Mamata Banerjee said that the nation has watched the attack on the
State's Finance Minister Amit Mitra outside the Planning Commission's
office by Left activists.Mamata Banerjee pointed out that if
such an incident can happen in front of the Planning Commission, it is a
sheer breakdown of the constitution. She said that the Left as a
political party has lost all credentials adding: " I feel sorry for
them."
A protester said: 'We demonstrated near the Yojna Bhavan. But if someone's shirt is torn in the melee, we are sorry for that.'
Sudipto Gupta, a promising leader of Communist Party of India-Marxist's SFI died after his arrest for participating in a protest programme against the state government's decision to stall student council elections in colleges for six months.
His comrades alleged that the youth died while being taken to jail by bus after being mercilessly beaten by police with batons that resulted in his head crashing against a lamp post.
But Mamata Banerjee claimed it was an accident and dismissed the incident as a "small" and "petty" matter.
